Data Engineer Trainee

The Commercial Insurance Data Management team at Zurich Insurance is seeking a Data Engineer Trainee to join us as you launch your career. In this role, you will gain hands-on experience building data solutions and learn from our experienced data professionals. We will support your development as you contribute to real business projects that help us create a brighter future for our customers and colleagues.
Your role
As a a Data Engineer Trainee, your main responsibilities will involve:
- Gathering and analysing data from multiple sources
- Supporting the development and maintenance of data pipelines using Python and SQL
- Learning to use cloud platforms (such as Azure or AWS) and tools like Databricks for data processing
- Assisting with the creation, testing, and automation of workflows using Airflow
- Working with GIT for code collaboration and version control
- Collaborating with other data experts, analysts, and stakeholders to understand requirements
- Documenting your work and sharing your learning with the team
- Bringing a curious and proactive mindset—asking questions, seeking feedback, and striving to improve
- Helping ensure data quality, integrity, and security
- Contribute to a positive and supportive team culture.
Your Skills and Experience
As a Data Engineer Trainee, your skill and experience will ideally include:
- University student, preferably 3rd grade in statistics, mathematics, computer science, information management, or similar.
- Strong analytical problem solver with critical thinking skills.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills.
- Curious and willing to learn new technologies and data engineering concepts
- Experience in data analysis is an advantage, but not a prerequisite
- Familiar with at least one programming language (Python preferred)
- Able to understand and write basic SQL queries
- Interested in working with cloud technology (Azure or AWS), Databricks, or data orchestration tools such as Airflow (experience is a plus, but not required)
- Proactive, detail-oriented, and eager to develop both technical and interpersonal skills
- Insurance knowledge is an advantage, but not a prerequisite
- Excellent written and spoken English.
