Mainframe Developer

The Mainframe Developer serves as a senior technical expert responsible for designing, developing, optimizing, and maintaining highly complex mainframe and legacy applications. This role requires deep experience in COBOL, CICS, JCL, and AS/400 (RPG IV), as well as strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to lead technical initiatives. The ideal candidate demonstrates strategic thinking, technical leadership, and a strong commitment to delivering high‑quality solutions that support business growth and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, test, and maintain highly complex applications on IBM mainframe platforms using COBOL, CICS, JCL, DB2, and SPUFI.
• Analyze business requirements and create robust technical solutions using RPG IV, ILE RPG, and CL on the IBM AS400 platform.
• Prepare detailed technical specifications and documentation for new and existing applications.

Technical Leadership & Best Practices

• Act as a senior technical resource and escalation point for complex design issues, performance challenges, and integration needs.
• Lead and participate in code reviews to ensure high standards of quality, security, and maintainability.
• Mentor junior developers and provide architectural guidance to programming teams.

System Optimization & Troubleshooting

• Conduct in‑depth analysis of system performance and resolve complex production issues.
• Utilize tools including IBM z/OS, MQ, and performance‑monitoring utilities.
• Optimize legacy applications and SQL queries, including stored procedures and scripts (DB2 and Microsoft SQL Server).

Collaboration & Innovation

• Work closely with business stakeholders, product owners, and cross‑functional teams to gather requirements and define technical solutions.
• Drive modernization efforts, including API-based integrations and cloud‑enabled transformation initiatives.
• Identify opportunities to improve operational processes and enhance system reliability.

Required Qualifications

• Advanced English proficiency (written and verbal).
• 10+ years of mainframe development experience, with strong expertise in COBOL, CICS, JCL, and DB2.
• 4+ years of hands-on experience with RPG IV, ILE RPG, and CL on AS/400.
• Deep experience in commercial insurance, particularly in underwriting, rating, pricing, and policy administration systems.
• Extensive SQL experience with stored procedures, scripts, and query optimization.
• Experience with Microsoft SQL Server, SSRS, Microsoft Visual Studio, and .NET tools.
• Demonstrated ability to lead technical projects and guide development teams.
• Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and proven time‑management skills.
• Strong commitment to confidentiality, integrity, and results-driven execution.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with mainframe modernization tools such as Micro Focus Enterprise Server or IBM z/OS Connect.
• Familiarity with modern programming languages, especially .NET.
• Experience working in Agile environments and CI/CD practices.
• Knowledge of integration approaches for legacy systems within cloud or hybrid architectures.

Technical Skills

• Expert-level proficiency in COBOL, CICS, JCL, DB2, SPUFI, and AS/400 development (RPG IV, ILE RPG, CL).
• Strong understanding of system performance tuning and debugging.
• Experience with integration technologies, messaging systems (MQ), and API-based communication.
