Property Energy Underwriter

Zurich is currently looking to hire a Mid-Level or Senior Energy Property Underwriter to join the team in Houston, TX. 
 

The Energy Property Underwriter will analyze and underwrite highly complex new and renewal business, under minimal direction, utilizing The Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework as a subject matter expert, ensuring a high-level service to customers. As a Senior Underwriter will serve as a leader and mentor to the team offering technical guidance on key coverage issues and forms. As a member of Zurich's Underwriting Team, you will enjoy the opportunity to fully apply and hone your underwriting and marketing skills while building relationships with Select Brokers across the regions. 
 

Zurich’s Energy group provides comprehensive energy risk solutions, risk engineering services and claims support tailored to the individual needs of oil and gas, petrochemical, natural resources, mining and power generation customers virtually worldwide.
 

Responsibilities include: 
 

  • Using a disciplined approach to exposure evaluation, risk assessment and pricing
  • Using risk insights, data and models to drive informed decisions at point of sale
  • Administering and monitoring underwriting rules and guidelines, insurance laws and regulations and rating manual rules
  • Working within broad limits and authorities on highly complex assignments 
  • Develop, maintain & collaborate with Line of Business representatives on referrals and other business-related needs, as appropriate.
  • May provide guidance to lower-level associates.
  • Supports the sales culture by being a Help Point for agents, brokers, and customers.
  • Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities.
  • Complete detailed opportunity assessment with key distributors to identify growth opportunities
  • Qualify accounts to meet with the organization's appetite, balanced with sound business opportunity.
  • Make broker/customer and on-sight calls with a planned and well-prepared purpose
     

This role will be filled at either the Mid-Level or Senior Underwriter level. The hiring manager will determine the appropriate level based upon the selected applicant’s experience and skill set relative to the qualifications listed for this position.
 

Mid-Level Energy Property Underwriter Basic Qualifications:
 

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting, or market facing area including brokerage experience in the Energy and Property Insurance industry.
    OR
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 6 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area
    OR
  • Zurich approved Apprenticeship program including an Associate Degree and 1 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area
    OR
  • Zurich approved Apprenticeship program including an Associate Degree and 4 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area
    AND
  • Knowledge of line/s of business and the legal and regulatory guidelines
  • Knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business 
     

Basic Qualifications for Senior Energy Property Underwriter: 
 

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area
    OR 
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area
    OR
  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area
    OR
  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 8 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area 
    AND
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Experience working on time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business
  • Experience working in a team environment
     

Preferred Qualifications both levels:
 

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Knowledge of Energy, Power Generation, Oil, Gas, Petrochemical and Mining are preferred.
  • Established broker relationships in the energy space
  • Superior skills in relationship building, active listening, needs analysis, and win-win negotiating.
  • Sales execution mindset
