Chief Life Actuary - Zurich Topas Life (ZTL)

Purpose of Role

As the Chief Life Actuary for Zurich in Indonesia, you will play a critical role in ensuring the financial stability and long-term success of the life insurance business in the country, by providing accurate reporting, implementing effective risk and control processes, and leading a high-performing actuarial team.

This is a pivotal role of ZTL and responsible to provide high quality actuarial advice to senior executives of the organization as well as fiduciary duty to the Board of Directors and the Regulator.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree or above in actuarial, insurance or finance related fields
  • At least 10 years of experience in the Actuarial area, at least 5 years of managing experience in the Finance or Actuarial area
  • At least 3 years post qualification from a recognized Actuarial Certification (e.g. Persatuan Aktuaris Indonesia, Society of Actuaries, The Institute of Actuaries of Australia, etc)
  • Excellent working knowledge of IFRS17, economic value and balance sheet.

Job Accountabilities - Key Accountabilities

  • Lead, Manage, supervise, coordinate and control the activities of the actuarial team of ZTL.
  • Provide accurate and timely reporting requirements not only for regulatory compliance in Indonesia but also for Zurich group reporting to ensure alignment with the global strategy and financial objectives of Zurich.
  • Be responsible for designing and implementing risk and control processes to ensure the integrity and accuracy of actuarial data and models. This will involve collaborating with internal stakeholders such as underwriting, finance, and risk management teams to identify and mitigate risks associated with the life insurance business in Indonesia.
  • Review and arrange necessary reinsurance arrangement
  • Make informed actuarial and business recommendations; effectively challenge and/or escalate issues within business decisions or processes that are unsupportable from an actuarial or business standpoint.
  • Ensure that data, methodology and processes used in analyses are appropriate, working cross functionally to ensure required quality and granularity.
  • Complete complex actuarial activities to develop risk based capital models and conduct calibration and parameterization activities.
  • Perform experience analysis and ensure the reasonableness of actuarial assumptions on pricing / valuation / planning
  • Proper provision and reporting on the liabilities of insurance policies and to ensure the adequacy of reserves; Chair local IFRS reserve committee.
  • Perform business projection and other necessary actuarial reports, e.g. EV report
  • Build a strong actuary team

Business Accountabilities

  • Prepare an annual work plan for the actuarial team and determine budgetary requirements and recruitment needs to enable the function to provide an effective service to the ZTL.
  • Provide actuarial expertise to initiatives to ensure that actuarial principles and regulatory requirements are an integral part of business change.
  • Build and maintain a detailed awareness of existing and impending regulatory change in Indonesia as well as other related markets and liaise with auditors and insurance regulators in own area of specialism to clarify the implications for business practice and advise senior colleagues accordingly.
  • Analyze and interpret complex data, identify and quantify business risks and evaluate performance in order to recommend appropriate action to enable ZTL to deliver business objectives.
  • Develop innovative actuarial techniques to enable conclusions to be drawn from the most complex or high volume of data and provide the organization with competitive advantage.
  • Evaluate and review the outputs of the actuarial team and advise senior colleagues of opportunities and risks arising from new product proposals/pricing policies/funding issues/competitor activity.
  • Provide leadership advocacy for data quality, granularity, and availability, to ensure robust inputs to actuarial processes.
  • Make informed actuarial recommendations based on professional judgment and experience; effectively challenge and/or escalate issues, that may be of a highly sensitive nature, within business decisions or processes that are not able to be supported from an actuarial standpoint.
  • Mentor and develop department of actuarial professionals, providing input to or leading global training and people development initiatives; effectively manage and implement talent management and succession planning processes; attract top internal and external talent.
  • Manage direct reports by providing direction and empowering them to deliver on results; act as a role model to actuarial professionals; support Life Insurance actuarial global talent initiatives; ensure that talent is being developed and direct reports are effective managers.
  • Support Regional Chief Life Actuary and Group Chief Actuary in fulfilling their reporting and governance responsibilities. Escalate actuarial issues as per Zurich actuarial and risk policy.
