The opportunity:

This is a pivotal leadership opportunity for ensuring that pricing remains a technical differentiator and a clear driver of underwriting performance, profitable growth and business plan delivery across one of the UK’s largest insurance businesses.

Reporting to the UK CUO and operating as a key member of the Underwriting Leadership Team, you will lead a pricing function of around 50 colleagues and set the technical standards, methodologies, tools and operating rhythm needed to turn pricing expertise into robust insight, independent challenge and measurable business value.

The role is central to ensuring that technical pricing capability is leveraged as a strategic differentiator.  You will work closely with underwriting, distribution, finance and wider business leaders to provide an objective view of pricing adequacy, rate strength, technical model enhancements and performance drivers, translating complex analysis into clear recommendations that support trading, remediation and growth decisions.

Success will require a leader who combines deep pricing or financial expertise and analytical credibility with commercial judgement, senior stakeholder influence and the confidence to provide constructive challenge in complex or time-sensitive trading contexts.

You will also lead the continued development of the pricing function as a technical centre of excellence, building capability, accountability, prioritisation and succession while ensuring the team’s work is focused on the areas of greatest business value.

Many of our employees work flexibly in a variety of different ways, including part-time, flexible hours, job share, an element of working from home or compressed hours. This is because we want the best people for our roles, and we recognise that sometimes those people aren’t available full-time. Please talk to us at interview about the flexibility you may need.

What will you be doing?

  • Lead the Pricing function as a technical centre of excellence and a core enabler of underwriting performance, profitable growth and business plan delivery across the UK business.
  • Lead pricing strategy for the UK, setting the direction for pricing tools, models, analytical capability and innovation, maintaining awareness of market developments and emerging pricing techniques, and ensuring the effective application of technology, AI and advanced analytics.
  • Own and evolve pricing methodologies, technical pricing standards, analytical frameworks, model governance and pricing tools, ensuring robust validation, compliance with applicable Technical Actuarial Standards (TAS), the regular calibration of modelled and non-modelled pricing components and adherence with regulatory and Consumer Duty expectations.
  • Provide independent, commercially grounded insight and challenge on pricing adequacy, rate strength, model outputs and portfolio decisions, translating complex technical concepts into clear recommendations and actions that support trading, remediation, growth and appetite decisions.
  • Build strong partnerships across underwriting, distribution, finance and business leadership, providing MI, reporting, insights and proposed actions that support the safe delivery of business plans while maintaining clear boundaries between pricing accountability and portfolio ownership.
  • Ensure technical pricing insight is converted into clear recommendations, agreed actions and measurable business outcomes, with adoption and value realised through relevant trading and performance rhythms.
  • Bring both technical authority and commercial judgement to pricing discussions, making clear recommendations where decisions need to be taken with imperfect data or within live trading cycles.
  • Lead and develop a high performing pricing function, strengthen technical capability, prioritisation, accountability, performance standards and succession while managing the function budget.
  • Act as a key member of the Underwriting Leadership Team, contributing pricing expertise to business performance, strategic delivery and the ongoing evolution of underwriting and pricing effectiveness.

What are we looking for?

  • Deep technical pricing or financial expertise, with a strong understanding of pricing methodologies, model calibration, rate adequacy, analytical frameworks and pricing governance.
  • Proven ability to translate technical pricing insight into clear business actions, portfolio choices and measurable performance outcomes.
  • Experience influencing senior stakeholders across a matrix environment, building confidence in technical pricing outputs while maintaining appropriate challenge.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence strategic business decisions through technical pricing insight, analytical credibility, commercial judgement and clear recommendations.
  • Track record of leading teams to deliver high-quality outputs with clear standards, pace and accountability in a complex environment.
  • Credibility to operate as a senior leader within the Underwriting Leadership Team, shaping business performance and strategic direction.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to distil complex technical analysis into concise, decision-oriented insight and convert recommendations into action.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritise activity on the areas of greatest business value and maintain delivery discipline through trading and performance cycles.
  • Experience leading and developing technical, analytical or pricing teams, building capability, accountability, succession and a performance-focused culture.
  • Strong leadership across both people leadership and cross-functional stakeholder leadership, with the confidence to challenge, align and influence without relying solely on direct authority.
  • Ability to align technical pricing activity to business objectives, underwriting performance and portfolio outcomes while preserving clear ownership of pricing standards and methodologies.
  • Collaborative leadership style with the ability to build trusted relationships across underwriting, finance, distribution and wider business functions while sustaining pace, clarity and accountability.
