International Property Underwriter

Working hours: This role is available on a part-time, job-share or full-time basis.

Location: London – Hybrid working with 3 days in our Mark Lane office.

The opportunity: 

We’re looking for and experienced Underwriter to join our International Wholesale Commercial Property Underwriting team on a permanent basis. If you share our passion for putting customers first and our relentless desire to meet their expectations, this role could be for you!

You’ll join a growing and successful market leading team of experienced underwriters providing a variety of risk manage and risk transfer solutions for International Commercial customers on both a direct and reinsurance basis through Retail and Wholesale London Market broker distribution channels.

This is a great opportunity for someone that is looking to progress their underwriting career into creating market leading innovative solutions for large and complex customers. We are looking for an individual who has significant experience in the APAC and South African insurance markets, who can proactively pipeline in appetite new business opportunities through all London Market brokers, both existing and new.

What will you be doing?

• Utilise Zurich digital tools and leading data analytics capabilities to assess Property risks to determine their acceptability, loss potential and appropriate pricing.
• Take ownership and responsibility for a complex renewal book of major Clients, both lead global programmes and follow and wholesale reinsurance.
• You will demonstrate strong product knowledge and expertise, providing guidance, coaching and taking referrals from other Junior Underwriters and Assistant Underwriters in the team. Collaboration and Communication are critical in this role.
• Build trusted long-term relationships with existing and prospective customers and brokers.
• Be a visible, leading Underwriter in your field, representing Zurich externally at broker and client engagements.
• Proactively pipeline in appetite new business opportunities across all major London Market brokers, both Retail and Wholesale.
• Work collaboratively with other Underwriters and colleagues in Risk Engineering, Distribution, Underwriting Service, Account Management and Claims teams.
• Offer market and portfolio insights in order to drive long term sustainable and profitable growth.
• Innovate, identify broker and customer needs and help create effective solutions.
• Deliver against underwriting and financial measures as outlined in the plan.
• Promote continuous improvement and process efficiency, in particular helping to drive forward Zurich’s digitization agenda.
• As a market facing Underwriter you will be a role model for Zurich Values and Behaviours within the team, being Focus on Customers, Simplify and Innovate. You will contribute to a positive and supportive team culture.

What are we looking for?

• International Programme Management or Underwriting experience (ideally within short tail first party line of business, the London Market and or Global Programme space). We would also look to consider exceptional candidates who have a broking or risk management background.
• Demonstrated history of successfully growing a profitable book of business.
• Strong relationship management skills.
• Strong analytical skills with the ability to challenge conventional thinking and the status quo.
• Good knowledge of the Property Risk Landscape and emerging global risk trends with particular focus on APAC and South African exposures.
• Proactive prioritisation skills and able to manage a varied workload effectively. Effective delegation skills and working in hybrid team environments also a plus.
• Strong verbal, written communication, and negotiation skills.
• Excellent team player.
• Strong negotiation and influencing.
• CII Qualified or equivalent or actively working towards accreditation.
