Head of Underwriting/Senior Underwriter (m/f/d)

This role is at the core of Zurich’s newly established cross-border individual life protection business – a dynamic area dedicated to driving growth and innovation. As part of a small, agile team you will collaborate across multiple markets to develop tailored life protection solutions for our customers. Together, we are shaping the future to secure brighter outcomes for those we serve, wherever they are in the world.

 

Main Responsibilities 

 

  • Formulate and implement underwriting policy for the Business Unit, supporting long-term profit and risk management goals within the cross-border individual life protection business
  • Lead underwriting activities during the initial scale-up period, ensuring consistency in practices   business growth
  • Ensure consistent application of underwriting policy by underwriting staff via a leading role in underwriter selection, training, development and assessment 
  • Establish, implement and monitor underwriting best practices to be used by the underwriting staff. Set and monitor underwriter approval levels
  • Provide senior technical expertise and formal review/sign-off on large face amount cases
  • Proactively coordinate with Group Life Reinsurance and Underwriting departments
  • Establish and conduct quality procedures to ensure compliance with underwriting and reinsurance
  • Monitor competitor underwriting practices and advise executive management as needed
  • Participate actively in product development to ensure underwriting considerations are well incorporated
  • Develop strong relationships with key distributors, promoting the Zurich brand and supporting the acquisition of profitable new business
  • Support the application of systems, controls, and procedures, sharing best practice within the team


Skills and Experience 


  • Fluent in English is mandatory; additional languages are an asset
  • 15+ years of experience in life underwriting or a related field
  • Professional certification in underwriting or insurance preferred
  • Strong understanding of life underwriting processes, principles, and assurance
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Accuracy, attention to detail, and effective measurement abilities
  • Agility, adaptability, and change management experience
  • Stakeholder management and customer service focus
  • Computer literate, including knowledge of Microsoft Office packages (e.g. MS Word and MS Excel)
  • Good organizational and time management skills, with ability to work accurately to deadlines
  • Constructive approach to working with internal and external stakeholders
