Large Property Underwriter (Level I or II)
Zurich North America is hiring a Large Property Underwriter (Level I or II) to join our Large Property team in our New York office! While this role requires you to work out of our New York office, you will have the flexibility to work on a hybrid basis. You will partner with your manager to set a flexible work schedule that supports you, our customers, and our brokers and agents. This role will require you to be visible in the marketplace to meet with our agents and brokers and be in the office/market three days per week, with one of those days being Monday.
In this role you will handle new and renewal Property business. As a member of Zurich's Large Property Underwriting Team, you will be responsible for maintaining and growing a book of Domestic and Global Property business. This is an exciting time to join the Large Property Team at Zurich!
This role will require approximately 15% travel nationally.
As a member of Zurich's Underwriting team, you will enjoy the opportunity to fully apply and hone your underwriting and marketing skills. Specifically, you will underwrite and analyze new and renewal Large Property business utilizing the Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework within delegated authority levels on assignments of higher technical complexity ensuring a high-level service to customers.
This role will be filled at either a Large Property Underwriter I or II. The hiring manager will determine the appropriate level based upon the selected applicant’s experience and skillset relative to the qualifications listed for this position.
In this role you will be responsible for:
- Serving as a customer industry advocate with a focus on improving the customer experience by understanding their risk and offering the best end to end solution for their insurance needs.
- Underwriting, analyzing and generating new and renewal business
- Market facing and production within the growing Large Property division
- Using a disciplined approach to exposure evaluation, risk assessment and pricing
- Using risk insights, data and models to drive informed decisions at point of sale
- Demonstrating strong analytical skills and executing as an innovative advisor
- Administering and monitoring underwriting rules and guidelines, insurance laws and regulations and rating manual rules
- Developing and maintaining agency and broker relationships
Large Property Underwriter I Basic Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent and 1 or more years of experience in the Insurance or Market Facing area
OR - High School Diploma or Equivalent and 2 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area
AND - Knowledge of the insurance industry and the legal and regulatory environment
- Knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, national/local filing regulations and guidelines
OR
Large Property Underwriter II Basic Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area
OR - High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area
OR - Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area
OR - Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 8 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area
AND - Knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Experience working on time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business
- Experience working in a team environment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Knowledge of Property lines of business and experience working with brokers
- Ability to effectively assess risk
- Strong knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, national/local filing regulations and guidelines
- Superior skills in relationship building, active listening, needs analysis, and win-win negotiating
- Possess knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business
- Excellent oral and written communication skills

Additional rewards may encompass short-term incentive bonuses and merit increases. We encourage candidates with salary expectations beyond the provided range to apply as they will be considered based on their experience, skills, and education. The compensation indicated represents a nationwide market range and has not been adjusted for geographic differentials pertaining to the location where the position may be fille. The combined salary range for this position is $73,400.00 - $152,200.00. The proposed salary range for the Level I is $73,400.00 - $120,300.00, with short-term incentive bonus eligibility set at 10%. The proposed salary range for the Level II is $92,900.00 - $152,200.00, with short-term incentive bonus eligibility set at 10%.
