As the Senior Lawyer – Insurance, reporting to the Head of Legal - Insurance, you will provide in-house legal, regulatory, and governance advice, with a primary focus on supporting the group insurance business to achieve its strategic objectives and manage legal, regulatory, and reputational risks. The role also supports the retail life insurance business, offering guidance on legal and regulatory requirements, contract negotiation, complaints and dispute resolution, regulatory dealings, compliance frameworks, governance, and company secretarial matters.
Additional responsibilities include drafting and negotiating a range of commercial contracts (including IT, outsourcing, and procurement), and advising on financial services, superannuation, commercial and corporate law, disputes, regulatory investigations, and data protection. The Senior Lawyer will deliver clear, practical legal advice, identify and address legal and governance issues, stay up to date with legal developments, evaluate and manage litigation risks, support process improvements, and help keep Zurich’s business units informed of legislative changes.
This is an initial 10-month contract.
Important to your success – let’s grow together
- Law degree and current Practising Certificate to practice law in New South Wales
- Minimum 8 years’ post-qualification experience in life insurance, with specific experience in group insurance or superannuation, gained in a law firm or in-house
- In-depth knowledge of the Australian financial services industry, especially life insurance, group insurance, and related laws
- Skilled at analysing, documenting, and presenting facts to support the organisation’s legal position
- Demonstrates initiative, problem-solving abilities, and manages deadlines and pressure effectively
- Strong analytical skills paired with a commercial understanding of business needs
- Capable of synthesising information and developing alternative resolution strategies
- Able to receive instructions, assess issues, and communicate advice clearly and in accessible language
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills, able to build and maintain trustful relationships at all organisational levels, with tactful customer relationship management
