Crop Technical Underwriting Director

Zurich North America is currently looking for a Crop Technical Underwriting Director for our North America Technical Underwriting team. This position reports to the Property Underwriting Officer and can be based in one of our Zurich offices with business travel expected.

The Crop Technical Underwriting Director is responsible for establishing Zurich North America Crop underwriting standards, driving underwriting guidelines and appetite, defining authority levels, and monitoring underwriting actions. S/he provides insights, underwriting knowledge, and supports product development for the Crop business unit. 


This leader will utilize their expertise to manage, design and drive diverse multidimensional strategies for our Crop book of business. S/he will work closely with our Global Colleagues and the Crop Unit Head of Underwriting to deliver portfolio quality and performance measurements, technical underwriting strategies, product management and pricing that support the achievement of the financial plans for this market-facing unit. We are looking for a leader with a strong Crop background who has the influencing and leadership skills and the ability to cultivate portfolio insights and actionable underwriting plans.

 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Support Underwriting and Claims engagement, including delivery of insights.
  • Monitor and provide thought leadership on trends, emerging issues and exposures.
  • Oversee Zurich North America’s risk accumulation across the Crop line of business.
  • Identification and management of portfolio quality metrics.
  • Risk selection, capacity deployment and account structure tactics and strategies.
  • Loss Lessons Learned.
  • Reinsurance activities.
  • Product health and product development with support from Head of Product Development and the Head of Crop Underwriting.
  • Continuous improvement and transparency of pricing tools.
  • Address regulatory issues and changes in legislation as needed.


Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 10 or more years of experience in the Property & Casualty Commercial Insurance Industry
    AND
  • Crop line of business experience

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Advanced and in-depth knowledge of the Crop line of business, Nat Cat exposures, and Reinsurance
  • Portfolio management, underwriting, product underwriting, product development, risk selection and pricing experience
  • Strong people management experience, Multi-level leadership skills
  • Experience building and implementing key strategies
  • Strong influencing, collaboration, conflict resolution, and presentation skills
  • Executive presence and the ability to interact across all levels of the organization
  • Ability to manage vision and purpose, lead the organization through innovative and creative thinking

 

At Zurich, compensation for roles is influenced by a variety of factors, including but not limited to the specific office location, role, skill set, and level of experience. Additional rewards may encompass short-term incentive bonuses and merit increases. We encourage candidates with salary expectations beyond the provided range to apply as they will be considered based on their experience, skills, and education. 


The compensation indicated represents a nationwide market range and has not been adjusted for geographic differentials pertaining to the location where the position may be filled. The proposed salary range for this position is $172,000-$281,700, with short-term incentive bonus eligibility set at 25%.
