Data & Analytics Business Unit Area Lead, National Accounts


Zurich North America is looking for a Data & Analytics Area Lead, National Accounts based in our North American Headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois, or our New York City office in lower Manhattan.


The Data & Analytics Business Unit Lead, National Accounts is a data-oriented leadership role.  In this role you will lead a variety of data-related projects and initiatives and serve as the primary data analytics contact for one of two functional areas within National Accounts, Construction or Customer Strategy & Broker Management.


The Data & Analytics Area Lead, National Accounts is also responsible for the following:


  • Serve as the resident data expert - cultivate expertise on the relevant data across all internal and external sources as to the strengths, weaknesses, and quality of each so you can act as the go-to resource for choosing the right data to answer the question at hand
  • Provide real-time data-enabled decision support – deliver data and insights to track strategies, perform impact studies, and answer targeted business questions as they arise on a quick turn-around basis, through either direct hands-on work or directing the work of others
  • Manage longer-term data/analytics projects – oversee technical staff from the centralized CDO pool, guiding the process of building, monitoring, enhancing predictive models or other analytical tools to ensure the end-product is fit-for-purpose and achieves desired business impact
  • Serve as the Functional Area’s liaison for data/analytics-related initiatives going on across the enterprise to ensure the function’s needs and interests are represented
  • Trusted advisor to leadership on all things data, leveraging deep understanding of business strategy, operations, and developing issues.


A successful candidate will have extensive experience using a technical and analytical skillset to solve business problems, excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical results into easily understandable concepts, making them into actionable project plans, and a track record of success partnering with stakeholders to leverage strategy and vision to create value and success for the business.


Basic Qualifications:


  • High School Diploma or Equivalent with 7 or more years of experience in Computer Science, Statistics or Mathematics and experience transforming data in the business analysis area
  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree in Computer Science, Statistics or Mathematics and 5 or more years of experience transforming data in the business analysis area
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Statistics or Mathematics and 5 or more years of experience transforming data in the business analysis area
  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Statistics or Mathematics and 3 or more years of experience transforming data in the business analysis area
  • PhD in Computer Science, Statistics or Mathematics and 0 or more years of experience transforming data in the business analysis area


Preferred Qualifications:


  • 7+ years of data & analytic experience using a technical skillset to solve business problems
  • P&C insurance knowledge strongly preferred; commercial insurance background preferred
  • Excellent business acumen and communication skills, demonstrated ability to distill technical results into a form that is compelling to a business audience and to translate insight into action
  • Strong data acumen, i.e., experience demonstrates that this candidate has a keen understanding of the strengths/weaknesses of different types of data and how to select/acquire the right data to solve the business problem at hand
  • Strong knowledge of SQL to extract data
  • Working knowledge of R, Python, or other statistical package to transform and analyze data
  • Experience applying statistical/predictive modeling/data science techniques, e.g., GLMs, decision trees and ensemble methods, clustering, association rules, etc.
  • Can successfully translate loosely defined business problems into an analytically tractable form
  • Has successfully delivered actionable business insights on a quick turn-around basis
  • Experience working with stakeholders to develop strategy and vision around the ways data and analytics can be leveraged to create value for the business
  • Proven track record managing complex projects, leading cross-functional teams, and driving initiatives to successful completion
  • Experience managing, coaching, and developing technical teams
