Senior Assistant General Counsel - Distribution


Zurich North America has an exciting opportunity for a talented attorney with management experience to join the Legal Services team as a Senior Assistant General Counsel – Distribution, within our prestigious Corporate Law department located out of our headquarters in Schaumburg, IL.  The attorney will manage a group of mid to senior level property/casualty and life insurance regulatory attorneys and report to the Head of the Insurance Regulation and Reinsurance Team in Corporate Law.  This role will also provide expert legal counsel on a broad range of property and casualty insurance regulatory matters related to distribution law and related contracts to enable the business to achieve its strategic and commercial goals in accordance with applicable laws and regulations and to protect and preserve Zurich’s tangible and intangible assets.  As a strategic partner to our business units, the ideal candidate will be able to provide expert legal advice on a wide variety of insurance regulatory matters including the development of our insurance products, and market conduct examinations. 

This Senior Assistant General Counsel will also review contracts as appropriate, address corporate policy and compliance issues, as well as provide legal advice on insurance laws and regulations along the business value chain, from product development to distributing products in the market, supporting the business to achieve its strategic and commercial goals.

NOTE: This position does not have litigation responsibilities.

The preferred location is our Zurich North American headquarters based in our Schaumburg, IL office. Zurich is proud to embrace a hybrid working environment. In this role you will be able work from home 2-3 days a week.

As a member of the team, the Senior Assistant General Counsel will:

  • Act as a strategic partner to clients by consulting on complex regulatory issues with a focus on distribution-related matters
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with key business unit leaders, functional subject matter experts, and other support unit personnel assigned to the business unit, to ensure the appropriate level of context and knowledge for the provision of effective legal guidance and delivery of problem-solving strategies
  • Support management in developing open and transparent relationships with key stakeholders which is consistent with the organization values and compliant with the spirit and the letter of the law
  • Proactively collaborate with the business unit leadership team in the development and execution of short-term and long-term strategies by providing legal perspective and partnering to problem-solve and identify creative, compliant solutions
  • Communicate all business unit needs to the appropriate Legal Services team member(s) to secure the necessary resources and ensure timely and accurate support is provided

Basic Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor and 10 or more years of experience in the Legal area
  • Member of the Bar
  • Knowledge of NILS, Lexis or Westlaw

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to engage, inform and influence decisions at senior levels of the organization
  • Insurance industry experience
  • People management experience
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience with a broad array of insurance distribution law matters including preparation of template and/or specific agreements to support business strategy (program administrator, standard agency and broker, incentive compensation, profit sharing, panel agreements) and legal advice related to legal issues arising out of transactions or issues with our distributors (examples:  broker of record, disputes, compensation questions) as well as producer licensing questions or requirements
  • Knowledge of or direct experience in the Property and Casualty and/or Life insurance marketplace and evidence of hands-on insurance regulatory counseling to support compliant solutioning
  • As a plus, experience in providing insurance regulatory advice to support product development, review of full array of insurance-related agreements including reinsurance, and market conduct examinations support
  • Ability to work in a team-based, solutions-oriented environment
  • Creative problem-solver adept at working in a fast-paced environment and successfully managing competing interests of multiple internal and external stakeholders
