The opportunity: 

We are looking for a qualified actuary (or candidate with equivalent expertise and will consider senior/experienced students) to join our life valuation team, as a development actuary. The role is to develop and improve the systems and processes used by the Life Actuarial team, by identifying improvements and delivering these and by incorporating the changes requested by the reporting teams. The development actuary will also chair the Development Group, prioritising and coordinating developments across the Life Actuarial department.

 

The Life Actuarial team is responsible for the monitoring, reporting, forecasting and longer term business planning for Zurich’s UK Life business under a range of reporting measures, including SII, Swiss Solvency Test, IFRS and UK GAAP. The team provide insights into the strategy and performance of the company and works in close collaboration with other finance and business areas as well as the Global Corporate Centre. 

 

We are looking for a self-driven individual, with Prophet development experience and preferably life assurance reporting experience. This role would suit a candidate with good modelling, technical, analytical and communication skills. The candidate should have a strong appreciation of change controls and governance, be capable of working independently within a small team and be enthusiastic about working collaboratively with a range of actuarial, finance and business areas.

 

This role is available part-time, job-share or full time. This is because we want the best people for our roles, and we recognise that sometimes those people aren’t available full-time.

 

 

 Key Responsibilities: 

  • Develop and improve actuarial systems, primarily but not exclusively deterministic Prophet, SQL and Excel spreadsheets.
    • Implement development changes as identified by the Reporting Teams and the Actuarial Systems Team.
    • Identify, design and development process improvements to further streamline reporting processes and ensure robust controls.
    • Understand and interpret data to ensure results are efficient, insightful and robust.
  • Prepare design and test documentation (unit / system / integration) for own developments, and review documentation from other developers, ensuring completeness, accuracy and adherence to Zurich standards.
  • Actively manage own time and workload, escalate issues and risks of likely deviation from agreed plan and agree resolution.
  • Chair the Development Group, to prioritise developments and coordinate efforts
  • Involved in running valuation processes for the purpose of:
    • running the process to assess what development is needed
    • to support initial roll out and embedding of a new development
  • Create and maintain strong working relationships across relevant Finance and business areas.

 

 

Your skills and experience:

  • Fellow of IFoA  (or similar experience) with experience of working in an actuarial reporting team.
  • Expert knowledge of coding Prophet, working knowledge of PE and other FIS software
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft Excel, strong VBA and working knowledge of Microsoft Word and SQL
  • Actuarial modelling experience including understanding of cash flow modelling, assumption setting, assessing data quality and analysis of movements.
  • Understanding of different reporting measures; IFRS 4, SII, IFRS 17
  • Experience with change control and documentation for processes and models
  • Good report writing skills
  • Confident communicator that is able to explain technical material to a range of stakeholders.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
