Location: Swindon/Fareham with hybrid working


Description of the team and role:


The UK DevOps team is part of the UK Operations and IT function which drives technology delivery and change across the UK business.  The UK DevOps team currently consists of four sub-teams: Mendix, Salesforce, MuleSoft and SmartComms, with the Mendix team expanding to a total of sixteen developers working across development and operational workstreams.  The DevOps team has fully embraced new ways of working including Agile, DevOps practices, cloud-first, and CI/CD.  You will work as part of the Mendix team responsible for the analysis, design, development, maintenance and support of Mendix applications.


The opportunity: 


Zurich Insurance UK is expanding its DevOps team to meet the increasing demand for digital transformation through application development, DevOps practices and innovation.  The DevOps team is helping the business transform by improving efficiency and by putting the customer at the heart of everything we do via our digital transformation work.


You will contribute to the development of new and existing Mendix applications for Zurich.  You will work directly with our business teams, technology experts, API and SmartComms teams to deliver enterprise-class solutions to internal and external customers.


For those candidates with suitable experience, there are opportunities to line manage developers and act as a Team Lead to a scrum team, providing technical leadership in support of complex project delivery.  Where applicable training in the use of the Mendix Automated Testing Suite (ATS), Application Performance Diagnostics (APD) and Application Quality Monitor (AQM) tools will be provided.

Key Responsibilities for all developers:


  • Software development using the Mendix Low-code platform.
  • Development using HTML, CSS and JavaScript technologies.
  • Perform analysis, user story capture, and design to drive Mendix development.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to define, design and ship new features.
  • Contribute to sprint planning and provide feedback to retrospectives.
  • Code reviews, defect triage and remediation, unit testing, and providing support for integration testing and non-functional testing.
  • Microflow reviews, defect triage and remediation, unit testing, and providing support for integration testing and non-functional testing.
  • Explain technical issues to project managers, developers, architects and business analysts in an easy to understand manner, and recommend clearly thought out solutions.
  • Deliver solutions aligned with Zurich’s compliance, risk, and security policies.
  • Work as a team to provide design review services to support less experienced developers.
  • Help manage and resolve production issues – working with customers as required.
  • Completed agreed on work within estimates and communicate status and issues promptly.
  • Able to take the lead on design and development tasks.
  • Produce project sprint progress reports to provide status updates on project progress.


Your skills and experience:


  • At least 18 months of Mendix software development experience.
  • At least Mendix RAD certified with Advanced certification desirable.
  • Have excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills.
  • Enjoy problem-solving and be logical.
  • Be able to work under press in a fast-paced environment.
  • Like working in a team with lots of different people.




  • Use of Mendix ATS to build unit and regression testing scripts.
  • Use of Mendix APD to diagnose application performance issues.
  • Use of Mendix AQM to drive application performance and quality.
  • Experience in working in an Agile environment.
  • Java development experience.
  • Experience in CI/CD practices using Azure DevOps (or similar).
  • Experience in using cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure.
  • People management experience with the ability to act as Team Lead and Scrum Master to a scrum team of Mendix developers.
