The opportunity: 

Zurich Insurance UK is expanding its DevOps team to meet the increasing demand for digital transformation.  The DevOps team is helping the business transform by improving efficiency and by putting the customer at the heart of everything we do via our digital transformation work.


An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the DevOps team as the Mendix Operations and Small Change Manager.  You will support and maintain the Mendix application portfolio and associated infrastructure, as well as execute small-change development.  Working directly with business teams across the UK and the wider IT and Operations team, you will ensure applications are available, and secure, and provide a timely response to software defects and incidents.


This is a great opportunity for an experienced IT operations manager (irrespective of the technologies) or an IT professional with the potential to develop and grow in the role. Ideally, you will be an experienced IT professional with a proven track record in people and stakeholder management.  You will be able to meet the operational needs of a growing portfolio of Mendix applications supporting multiple lines of business, translating defects, incidents and problems into requirements and resolutions.  You will also have a passion for software engineering excellence and a drive for improved applications and infrastructure performance and automation.

What will you be doing?

  • Provide leadership, management and mentoring of the Mendix Operations and Small Change team; having line management responsibilities for some staff.
  • Use the ‘Service Now’ portal to triage, clarify, prioritise, manage and resolve Mendix-related defects, incidents and problems.
  • Triage, clarify, prioritise, coordinate testing, schedule and develop app ‘small change’ across the Mendix platform, coordinating change with in-flight projects.
  • Assign and monitor Mendix configuration and development work to members of the Operations and Small Change team for execution.
  • Apply the latest DevOps Ops & SC Standard Operating Procedures, and DevOps Governance model to all development and operational activity.
  • Work across the business and clients to gather, understand, and define business requirements for small change or minor project delivery work.
  • Maintain, configure and support the Mendix Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery pipeline toolsets and processes via the team.
  • Engage with Product Owners to understand application and business roadmaps, and that Product Owners are meeting their responsibilities and obligations.
  • Work collaboratively in an Agile framework to design solutions that meet business requirements and that align with user story acceptance criteria.
  • Participate in key meetings with the business and clients including requirement gathering discovery sessions, Mendix, and technology demonstrations.
  • Ensure the business understands work that is chargeable and non-chargeable, and ensure they are cross-charged accordingly.
  • Report on Mendix Operations and Small Change status to the Mendix Lead.
  • Identify and implement strategic and operational improvements to Mendix applications.

What are we looking for?

  • Experience in people management.
  • Experienced in translating business demand into requirements.
  • Experience in managing competing demands, from demanding stakeholders in a frenetic environment.
  • Have some software development experience.
  • Great interpersonal skills, and good written and oral communication skills – being able to talk directly to customers to understand requirements.
  • Enjoy problem-solving and think logically.
  • Work collaboratively with the business to turn ambiguity into requirements.
  • Contribute to working in a diverse team with different backgrounds and skills.
  • Take responsibility for a piece of work from start to finish.
  • Enjoy providing a supportive environment to growing people and a team to deliver first-class operational and development support.


  • Any Mendix low-code or other low-code platform experience
  • Experience working in an Agile environment
  • Knowledge of DevOps and Cloud concepts
