Zurich Canada is currently looking for an AVP, Liability Manager, Western Region to lead and manage market-facing underwriters focused on achieving profitable growth and excellence in underwriting execution.
Reporting to the Head of Liability, you will be responsible for managing a team of experienced underwriters, strengthening key distributor relationships, identifying new growth opportunities, and ensuring alignment with Zurich’s risk appetite and strategic objectives.

What you will do:
• Manage market-facing underwriters who proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities.
• Identify new growth opportunities with key distributors within your area of responsibility.
• Ensure accounts are properly qualified and aligned with the organization’s appetite while balancing sound business opportunities.
• Conduct joint broker, agent, and customer visits with underwriters, ensuring calls are well-planned and purposeful.
• Oversee negotiations of terms and conditions and close deals to drive profitable outcomes.
• Promote cross-selling within areas of responsibility to increase product density and strengthen account relationships.
• Provide continuous coaching on sales best practices and underwriting excellence.
• Mentor staff to develop strong broker and client networks within the industries underwritten by the business unit.
• Monitor sales funnels and production metrics to ensure business objectives are met.
• Accurately calculate target pricing by effectively utilizing underwriting tools.
• Identify market trends, emerging risks, and coverage exposures that may impact business results; partner with actuarial to ensure proper rate and price structures.
• Manage relationships with producers by conducting line-of-business, book-of-business, class, and segment analysis to ensure profitability and sustainable growth.
• Market Zurich products and services through agency and brokerage networks.
• Support the development and maintenance of agent/broker relationships to achieve profitable growth, market share expansion, and account retention.
• Continuously analyze performance, including new business, loss ratios, expense ratios, and product mix, to identify improvement opportunities.
• Review agency performance, profitability, and growth trends to recommend and implement targeted action plans.
• Participate in business travel as required and maintain flexibility for extended hours during peak periods.
• Maintain a valid driver’s license as required.
What you bring to the table:
Job Qualifications
Required:
• High School Diploma or Equivalent and 7 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area.
AND
• 2 or more years of management experience.
Preferred:
• Bachelor’s Degree.
• Advanced knowledge of product lines and the insurance industry.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Strong relationship-building and presentation skills.
• Results-oriented mindset.
Compensation for roles at Zurich varies depending on a wide array of factors including but not limited to the specific office location, role, skill set, and level of experience. The salary range provided is a nationwide market range and has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location where the position may be filled. As required by local law, Zurich provides in good faith a reasonable range of compensation for roles. Compensation may exceed the range listed based on the evaluation of skillset and experience. The starting salary range for this position is $140,000 - $200,000.
