Senior Middle Markets Principal Engineer


Zurich’s Middle Markets Risk Engineering team is seeking a Senior MM Principal Engineer. This individual contributor is responsible for the development of tools & training for underwriting and engineering as well as assessment and/or delivery of risk control consulting services and technical support on complex risk exposures. Works collaboratively with senior level engineers and underwriting management. Will work independently to the drive engineering strategy and support the profitable growth of the Middle Market book.  This role reports to the VP of Middle Markets Risk Engineering. This is a work from home role. This role includes a company car with 10% overnight travel possible. 


The Senior MM Principal Engineer plays a critical role as the subject matter resource for Middle Markets, Including:


  • Serve as the subject matter resource for Middle Markets in Risk Engineering
  • Provide technical guidance and recommendations as a subject matter expert to customers and business partners in order to support the resolution of the most complex customer cases and develop precedents to improve customer service
  • Support development of Middle Market focused tools / services that enhance or expand our value proposition to customers and Zurich
  • Support / initiate development of RE staff as “all lines” REs
  • Analyze large loss events for insights into; prevention, relevance to our assessment process, and the potential for service or tool development  


 The Ideal Candidate will apply these Key Skills:


  • Represents the region in the respective global technical center team
  • Drives the deployment of technical training initiatives to increase cross competences within MM RE
  • Drives the development of literature ~ White Papers, Risk Topics, Position Papers on areas of relevance for MM
  • Provides technical support to less experienced/qualified risk engineers, involved in the delivery of risk assessment and risk improvement services to customers and business partners
  • Responsible for Line of Business specific technical updates and maintenance of organizational knowledge including Life Sciences.
  • Provide effective advice on risk management issues to external customers and internal business partners
  • Participate in loss investigations
  • Support the Liability, Property, WC, and Fleet SME’s


This role will be filled at either the Senior or Principal level. The hiring manager will determine the appropriate level based upon the selected applicant’s experience and skill set relative to the qualifications listed for this position.


Basic Qualifications for this role are as follows: 


Senior Level:


  • Bachelors Degree and 6 or more years of experience in the Risk Engineering area
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 8 or more years of experience in the Risk Engineering area
  • Zurich Certified Apprentice, including an Associates degree and 6 or more years of experience in the Risk Engineering area
  • Experience working in a team environment


Principal Level:


  • Bachelors Degree and 8 or more years of experience in the Risk Engineering area
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10 or more years of experience in the Risk Engineering are
  • Zurich Certified Apprentice, including an Associates degree and 8 or more years of experience in the Risk Engineering area
  • Knowledge of exposures, controls and best practice risk improvement


Successful candidates will also possess:


  • Ability to analyze statistical data related to the four lines of coverage in MM
  • Strong research, writing, communication and presentation ability
  • Ability to balance multiple initiatives at one time ~ adjust priorities as required
  • Ability to partner with persons throughout Risk Engineering and the organization to achieve goals
  • Ability to coach others
  • Attention to details
  • Life sciences experience
  • Property Q2P 2 or greater
  • Casualty Q2P2 or greater
